A household of two in Leesburg, FL attended an educational seminar hosted by Optimus Solar and then requested a solar PV system to off-set 100% of their electricity costs. 

The owners charged Optimus Solar to design a system that would provide the maximum return on investment while aesthetically tying into the home design and complying with their neighborhood’s HOA requirements. This home also has a whole-home generator, which was considered during engineering and installation.  Solar energy systems, done correctly, do not interfere with generator operations in any way and can be integrated without complications.

The rear of the home faces due south, ideal for installing as much solar as possible on this non-visible roof face.  US-manufactured panels were used, as well as US-manufactured rails, feet and supporting components.  All modules except four were able to fit on the rear south-facing roof of the home, with the remaining panels being installed in a clean line on the west side of the home.

Optimus Solar supported the homeowners in the following ways:

·      No pressure education on solar energy and available financing options

·      Assistance with HOA approval process, even before signing of contract

·      In-house financing for a portion of the solar energy system

With domestic parts being utilized, the owners are assured of reduced environmental impact in shipping and manufacturing, as well as availability of parts should any warranty items need addressing (highly unlikely, but good to have peace of mind).

This system will return the initial investment in ~8 years while providing for long-term cash flows for the owners and an investment in the local economy and environment.  The owners now only have their monthly connection fee to pay to the utility. 

Additionally, to ensure accountability for all representations, the owners have live power production tracking included for 25 years, allowing them to see in real-time what the system produces and to track their ROI.

Northwest Orange County Home - Solar PV and EV Charging

Owners of a home in Northwest Orange County desired a solar PV installed on their residence.

GOALS

  • Reduce electricity costs associated with a multi-generational family living unit

  • Maximize Return on Investment with a custom panel design

  • Utilize the maximum number of American-made parts

  • Support the charging needs of a recently-purchased Electric Vehicle

In designing the system, Optimus prioritized the owner’s desires for ROI and aesthetics. The final system design turned out to be a smaller system than was theoretically available for the home, because it maximized their return on investment and looked best on the home. All racking systems and modules chosen were 100% US- manufactured. This allowed for more confidence in quality control, personal relationships with suppliers and competitive pricing.

An additional 30 modules could have been added to the west-facing roof, but due to the south roof face having little to no shade, the decision to only utilize this area allowed a system payback in less than 8 years. All-black panels, junction boxes, feet and racking systems were used for the solar PV element to tie into the roof color and provide a uniform appearance.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

This system will return the initial investment in under 8 years while providing for long-term cash flows for the owners and an investment in the local economy and environment. It returned $180 in its first month of operation, $10 more than predicted. All components came warrantied for 25 years, and 30 years on the power production represented by the panel manufacturer. All components and labor are warrantied for the duration of the system payback period, meaning that this payback is guaranteed as there will be no further out-of-pocket expenses for the owners at a minimum through the first 8 years. Additionally, by coupling this with their electric vehicle, the owner’s reduced their per mile costs of driving by >80%.

This system came with power production tracking included for 25 years, allowing the owners to see in real-time what the system produces. This accountability is critical to solar transparency. The system was added to their homeowner’s policy at no additional charge, providing peace of mind.

Solar PV, Water Heater, and Pool Heater - Eustis, FL

The Task

A family in Eustis, FL wanted to:

  1. Reduce electricity costs associated with water heating by installing a solar water heater and a solar pool heating system

  2. Invest in a rooftop Solar PV system to produce electricity and provide a cash-flow stream for 30+ years

The Process

  1. To minimize costs of infrastructure and future maintenance, the solar water heater was installed as close to the water tank as possible.

  2. The solar PV system was designed to maximum efficiency on the south-facing roof.

  3. Black panels, feet and racking systems were used for the solar PV element to tie into the roof color.

  4. Finally, the solar pool heater was installed, extending the swimming season by 4 months!
